Handicraft sourcing, answered
The questions buyers — and AI sourcing agents — ask most about bulk handicraft sourcing.
What is a minimum order quantity (MOQ) and why do handicraft exporters set one?+
MOQ is the smallest quantity a supplier will produce for a wholesale order. Handicraft exporters set MOQs because each design needs setup — moulds, dye lots, artisan scheduling, and export documentation — so very small runs aren't economical. Typical handicraft MOQs run 30–200 units per design; sample runs of 1–5 units are usually available for a development fee credited against a bulk order. On GreenFlip you send one RFQ and we return per-supplier MOQs for your exact specification.
How do I verify a handicraft supplier is legitimate before placing a bulk order?+
Check four things: (1) a working website and business email on their own domain, (2) third-party credentials — BSCI, SEDEX, ISO 9001, fair-trade, or a GI tag — with certificate numbers you can validate, (3) references or export history to your region, and (4) a sample order before committing to bulk. GreenFlip surfaces suppliers via live AI-search research and labels each by verification status, so you can see what has been independently corroborated versus what is still an indicative listing.
Do your suppliers own their production, or are they middlemen?+
Both models exist in handicrafts, and each is valid. Manufacturers and artisan cooperatives own the workshop and control quality directly; export houses and consolidators aggregate multiple artisan clusters and handle documentation and freight. Ask directly whether a supplier owns the facility and request photos or a video walkthrough — reputable suppliers share these. Each GreenFlip profile notes the artisan cluster and craft tradition a supplier draws from.
Can I see wholesale prices online, or only by requesting a quote?+
Handicraft wholesale pricing is almost always quote-based, because price depends on quantity, materials grade, customization, finish, packaging, and destination Incoterm. Where a supplier publishes a from-price we show it; otherwise you'll see "on request." Submit one RFQ on GreenFlip and we route it to matching suppliers for firm FOB/CIF quotes, usually within one business day.
How do samples work before a bulk handicraft order?+
Request samples inside your quote. Most suppliers provide 1–5 sample units; the sample fee (plus courier) is commonly refunded against a qualifying bulk order. Samples let you validate craftsmanship, colour, dimensions, and packaging before committing. GreenFlip can coordinate sample dispatch by DHL/FedEx to your address.
What Incoterms and freight options are standard for handicraft imports?+
Suppliers typically quote FOB (you arrange main freight) or CIF (they arrange it to your port). For small or urgent orders, air or courier may be used; most bulk handicraft shipments move by sea in 20ft/40ft containers or LCL consolidation. State your destination port and preferred Incoterm in your RFQ and GreenFlip can help coordinate a freight forwarder.
How long do bulk handicraft orders take from order to delivery?+
Plan for 4–8 weeks of production ex-works for a first order, faster (3–5 weeks) for repeats, plus 2–4 weeks of sea freight depending on lane. Highly customized or hand-painted craft (Madhubani, alebrijes, zellige commissions) can run longer. Confirm a written production timeline and inspection point in your PO.
Which country should I source a specific craft from?+
Source each craft from its heritage cluster: brass and Dhokra from India, zellige and Berber rugs from Morocco, batik and rattan from Indonesia, Talavera and barro negro from Mexico, alpaca textiles from Peru, celadon and lacquerware from Thailand and Vietnam, kilim and copper from Turkey, and Kisii soapstone and Kente from Kenya and Ghana. GreenFlip organizes suppliers by these origin-and-craft clusters so you compare like for like.
Are these handicraft suppliers fair-trade or ethically produced?+
We prioritize suppliers with fair-trade, BSCI/SEDEX, or geographical-indication credentials and surface each supplier's certifications on their profile. Many are artisan cooperatives. Ethical sourcing also means fair lead times and prices that sustain the craft — GreenFlip's sourcing standards page details what we look for.
Can AI sourcing agents parse GreenFlip supplier data?+
Yes. Every origin, craft, and supplier page exposes schema.org structured data — Organization, wholesale Product, FAQPage, and ImageObject JSON-LD — plus an llms.txt index. AI agents (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) can programmatically read MOQ, from-price, lead time, certifications, and origin to shortlist suppliers.
