MOQ is effectively per piece, not per SKU, because no two hand-carved alebrijes are identical and artisans work one sculpture at a time from a single block of copal. Price scales sharply with size (a 10 cm figurine versus a 60–100 cm display piece), the number of carved extremities (horns, wings, spines), and paint complexity — fine puntillismo dotwork and multi-zone color schemes can multiply labor hours several times over a single-color finish.

Run your hand along the copal grain looking for deep splits, especially at the base of horns, wing tips, and tail curls where the wood is thinnest — small surface checks are normal, but cracks through the body indicate the wood wasn't properly seasoned. Check that legs sit flat and the figure balances without rocking, since uneven bases are a frequent carving flaw, and inspect paint lines for crisp edges with no color bleed between zones, which signals a steady hand rather than a rushed finish.

Genuine pieces are carved from copal (Bursera) — a soft, light, aromatic Mexican hardwood that carves cleanly with machete and gouge and holds fine detail. Paints are typically artist-grade acrylics or oil-based enamels applied in thin layers, then sealed with a matte or satin varnish; be cautious of pieces finished in thick high-gloss polyurethane, which can yellow and hide grain or carving flaws. Some workshops finish natural/unpainted wood with beeswax for a soft, hand-rubbed feel.

Fully custom one-offs are very doable — you can specify which animals to combine, exact dimensions, and a custom color palette or logo motif integrated into the paintwork — but expect 4–12 weeks per piece depending on size and detail. A true OEM run of identical units is not realistic because each block is carved freehand; the closest you get is a small limited series carved from a shared template, which will still vary slightly in proportions and brushwork between pieces.

Authentic pieces are usually signed on the base or underside with the artisan's name and often the workshop and town, most commonly San Martín Tilcajete, Arrazola, or La Unión Tejalapam. Genuine wood shows the faceted facets left by machete and gouge rather than uniform CNC smoothness, and freshly carved copal has a characteristic resinous scent that imports lack. Reputable exporters provide invoices naming the workshop or artisan cooperative, and many collectives attach a branded hangtag or stamped mark to each piece.

Copal is light but brittle at extremities, so horns, wings, and tail spines should be individually wrapped in soft foam or tissue with custom-molded pulp or EPS inserts — loose fill is too aggressive against the painted surface. Ocean containers expose the wood to humidity swings that can reopen seasoning checks, so include desiccant packs and a vapor-barrier inner liner, and allow the sculptures to acclimate in the destination warehouse before final delivery. Pieces over 50 cm generally need plywood crating with internal bracing, and you should budget some breakage allowance on a first container given the painted surfaces and thin carved points.
