MOQ is largely driven by bowl size and the hammering time required per piece - small bowls (10-15cm) often have lower minimums, while larger bowls (25cm+) require fewer pieces per order because each takes much longer to shape by hand. Unit price scales with metal weight (alloy is priced per kilogram) and labor hours, both of which rise steeply as diameter increases. Custom finishes, matched tone sets, or specific engravings will further raise minimum order requirements.

Quality is primarily judged by sound: strike the bowl and listen for a clear, sustained tone with rich overtones rather than a short, tinny ring that suggests thin or uneven walls. Visually inspect the rim for roundness and evenness - warping causes an uneven sound when a suede striker is run around the edge. Also check the interior and exterior for hairline cracks (often introduced during quenching), dent consistency in the hammer marks, and any flaking of an applied patina or blackening finish.

Traditional references are to 'pancha loha' (five metals) or 'saat dhatu' (seven metals) - typically a bronze base with varying additions of copper, tin, zinc, iron, and sometimes lead, silver, or gold, though the exact recipes are proprietary to each workshop. In practice, higher copper and tin content generally produces a warmer, longer-sustaining tone and commands a higher price, while bowls with more zinc or iron tend to sound brighter and are priced lower. Some workshops also produce pure brass or pure bronze bowls, which behave acoustically and visually quite differently.

Custom diameters, weights, and exterior treatments (matte, polished, antique blackened, gold-leafed) are achievable within most Nepal workshops, which typically work in sizes from roughly 8cm to 40cm. However, traditional hand-hammered bowls are not tuned to precise musical frequencies the way machine-made crystal or quartz bowls are - the tone is a byproduct of shape, wall thickness, and alloy, and varies slightly even within a 'matched' set. Custom engravings of mantras, deities, or buyer logos on the exterior are widely offered and usually add to per-unit cost rather than MOQ.

Genuine hand-hammered bowls show irregular, overlapping hammer marks across both interior and exterior, and no two bowls in a batch will be dimensionally or tonally identical. Request workshop photos, short video of the artisan at work, and the supplier's handicraft cooperative or Department of Industry export registration. Be cautious of any claim of a geographic indication (GI) for singing bowls - Nepal has registered GIs for some products but not for singing bowls specifically, so authenticity rests on supplier reputation, physical inspection, and on-site visits where possible.

Singing bowls are dense - a 30cm bowl can weigh several kilograms - and freight is often charged by volume weight because of the bulky cushioning required, so expect air or sea rates to be higher than for lighter handicrafts. Each bowl should be wrapped individually in soft cloth or foam with extra rim protection, since the lip is the most fragile feature and any impact flat spot will alter the sound. Brass and bronze alloys tarnish in humid sea transit, so include silica gel in each carton and consider sealed polybags for tropical destinations, and budget for ISPM-15 heat-treated wooden crates if shipping by LCL or FCL.
