For hand-spun, hand-woven, and especially hand-embroidered (sozni, kani, or aari) shawls, expect much higher MOQs because a single heavily embroidered shawl can take one artisan weeks to months to complete. Production is capacity-constrained by available needleworkers rather than by machine setup, so vendors typically quote in small batch cycles per design rather than per color.

Hold the shawl to light and assess the soft, matte drape and high warmth-to-weight ratio — pure Pashmina should not look glossy like a silk blend, and the fine fibers should feel slightly grippy rather than slick. Confirm the fringes are hand-twisted from the warp ends (not glued, knotted, or sewn-on) and treat small irregular slubs as a sign of authentic hand-spun yarn rather than a defect. On embroidered pieces, flip the shawl and verify the reverse shows the same motif clarity as the face — pulled threads, skipped stitches, dye bleeding into adjacent colors, and broken warps near the selvedge are the typical rejection-grade issues.

Specify clearly between 100% Pashmina (underfleece from the Changthangi goat) and the common commercial blends: Pashmina–wool for warmer rustic drape, Pashmina–silk at roughly 70/30 for the sheer, lustrous 'ring shawl' weight, and Pashmina–viscose for lower-priced fashion pieces. Confirm whether you want a 'hard finish' (loom-state with light sizing to hold shape during embroidery and export) or a 'soft finish' (fully washed and de-sized for ready-to-wear drape). Bulk export is normally shipped hard-finished, so plan for finishing, softening, or fragrance treatment at destination.

For solid-color stock-design Pashmina with your own woven labels, bar tags, and custom packaging, typical lead times run 4–6 weeks after yarn and dye-lot confirmation. Custom sozni, aari, or kani embroidery on a new motif requires a master craftsman to develop the pattern map and sample — realistic timelines are 8–16 weeks for sampling plus another 8–12 weeks for bulk production. Most workshops will only commit to a small number of new motifs per order, because each new design consumes artisan capacity for months and they cannot switch rapidly between complex needlework programs.

Shawls woven in the Kashmir region from genuine Pashmina fiber can carry the registered Geographical Indication 'Kashmir Pashmina', issued with a unique registration number per piece through the recognized artisan and cooperative clusters around Srinagar. The India Handloom mark and India Handloom Brand tag can be applied to genuinely handwoven pieces, while machine-made or mill-blend 'pashmina-style' shawls are not eligible for the GI. Always request the GI certificate copy, the artisan or society registration matching the loom cluster, and a fiber-content declaration on the commercial invoice to substantiate the claim at customs and retail.

Pashmina is hygroscopic and vulnerable to moth damage, mildew, and permanent fold creases, so specify acid-free tissue interleaving, individual breathable bags, and a rigid export carton without heavy compression. For long sea freight include silica desiccant packs and naphthalene-free moth protection, and request rolled packing rather than folded for any embroidered or kani-worked piece, because hard fold lines pressed into the shawl for weeks will show through the needlework and are difficult to remove later. Allow extra cube in your freight quote — fine Pashmina shawls are light but bulky, and air freight is often driven by volumetric weight rather than actual kilograms.
