MOQ is set by the kiln load — workshops fire a fixed number of pieces per campaign, and partial firings dramatically raise per-unit cost, so producers quote in multiples of a full kiln. Pricing scales with hand-painting complexity because each color in the motif is a separate brush pass, and Denomination of Origin rules prohibit decal or transfer substitution. Larger formats like 20x20 cm or 15x15 cm tiles reduce pieces-per-kiln and push the floor quantity higher than small trivet-style pieces.

Hold the piece under raking light and check the glaze for 'motas' (tiny bubbles or specks) and 'picos' (small chips from where pieces touched in the kiln) — minor ones are tolerated, clusters are not. Look for even, glossy glaze coverage with no bare clay showing, sharp painted edges with no bleeding, and consistent color saturation between pieces in the same batch. Hairline 'cuarteado' crazing is a traditional hallmark of majolica firing and is usually accepted, but through-cracks, chips on rims, and unbaked-looking matte patches are legitimate rejects.

Authentic Talavera uses a white-firing earthenware clay (barro blanco) sourced from specific quarries in the Puebla–Tlaxcala valley, which is what gives the brilliant background the mineral pigments sit on. The glaze is a tin-oxide-opacified majolica that is now lead-free under post-1990s reform, firing glossy and slightly milky. Colors come from mineral oxides mixed directly into the glaze — cobalt for blue, copper for green, manganese for brown/black, iron for yellow, and antimony or iron for orange/mauve — not from underglaze painting.

Custom motifs are absolutely possible since the process is hand-painted, but the workshop must cut tissue-paper stencils (plantillas) and color-match each new pigment by eye, so sampling cost is real. Colors outside the traditional six — blue, yellow, black, green, orange, mauve — usually require new pigment testing because the lead-free tin glaze reacts differently to many oxides, and some simply won't fire stable. Budget a 4–8 week sampling round with strike-tests before production runs are committed.

Look for the 'Denominación de Origen Talavera' mark issued under Mexico's IMPI and administered by the Consejo Regulador de la Talavera, which restricts certification to workshops in Puebla, San Pedro Cholula, San Andrés Cholula, Atlixco, and Tecali. Every certified piece carries a numbered hologram sticker, the maker's registered mark, and the DO logo on the back. Without that hologram, the item is 'talavera-style' majolica and cannot be marketed or labeled as protected-origin Talavera, which matters for customs and resale.

Each piece needs acid-free tissue or foam wrapping plus corner protectors, with tiles stacked face-to-face on foam dividers inside a wooden export crate — double-walled cardboard alone is not enough for full container loads. Sea freight is the default because lower handling vibration actually beats air freight for thinner wall pieces, though air makes sense for small, high-value orders under time pressure. Even with proper crating, build a 3–5% breakage allowance into your landed cost, because the brittle majolica glaze and porous bisque will chip on rim contact regardless of packing.
