Larger rugs also lock up drying space, so production scheduling caps how many pieces a workshop can run in parallel.

Press the felt firmly with your thumb — it should spring back evenly with no thin, papery, or spongy spots, since uneven agitation leaves weak zones that pill, tear, or develop holes in use. Confirm surface fibers are fully integrated with no loose hairs standing up, and that shape is symmetrical: balls truly round, slippers mirror-matched left/right, rugs flat without ridges from poor felting. For dyed pieces rub a damp white cloth across the surface to test for crocking, and always request a wash-test report, because hand-felted wool is notorious for uneven shrinkage and color loss on the first wash.

Most Nepal-made felt uses New Zealand crossbred wool (typically around 27–32 micron) or coarser local Tibetan/Changra wool, sometimes blended — finer fiber gives a smoother, denser felt while coarser fiber produces a fuzzier, more rustic surface that pills faster. Custom work is very feasible because the medium is forgiving — submit a Pantone reference, sketch, or swatch and the workshop dyes the wool, lays it out by hand, and felts the design into the piece. However, fine line art, gradients, and photorealistic motifs do not translate well; the technique favors bold shapes, geometric patterns, animal silhouettes, and mandalas with clear color blocks. Custom rug lead times typically run 8–14 weeks because each color is dyed in small batches and the layout is done manually before felting locks everything in.

The most common third-party marks you will see are Fair Trade (WFTO Guaranteed or Fair Trade Federation member marks) and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 for residual chemicals; GOTS is rarer because organic chain-of-custody is hard to maintain across the small fiber lots typical of cottage-level production. 'Handmade in Nepal' and 'Nepal Fair Trade' are self-declared unless backed by a member body, so ask for the importer or artisan group's license number. For felted wool specifically, request documentation of workshop location and fiber origin rather than relying on a GI label — the recognized Nepalese GI marks (such as Dhaka) cover woven textile categories, not felted goods.

Felted wool is heavy relative to its volume, so air freight is often the only economical option and volumetric weight will penalize rugs rolled tightly into cartons. The fiber is vulnerable to clothes moths and moisture in transit, so insist on sealed poly bags with silica gel desiccant and keep cartons off untreated wooden pallets that may harbor larvae. Slippers and toys ship well nested and slightly compressed, but rugs must be rolled (never folded) around a cardboard core tube to prevent permanent creasing, and you should budget 24–48 hours after arrival for the felt to relax back to its full thickness.
