MOQ is set by the studio based on size and iconographic complexity — a small 30x40 cm thangka can often be ordered in 1–3 pieces, but a 60x90 cm deity or full mandala typically requires 5–10+ pieces because each takes a trained artist several weeks of solo work. Unit price scales with surface area, the number of deities and hand-painted details, gold or mineral-pigment use, and whether a brocade silk frame is included. Switching to a different deity or mandala within the same order does not lower the per-piece price, because each new subject requires its own reference drawing (tsakli) and setup time.

Start with the outlines — the black or gold brush lines (the 'tsakli' underdrawing) should be even, continuous, and free of tremor, gaps, or rewetting marks, since they form the skeleton that all color sits inside. Then inspect for pigment cracking or flaking (most common in heavy white and blue passages where the chalk ground is thick), color bleeding across outlines, and uneven washes in skin tones. Also check the silk brocade border for fraying, the cotton backing for stains or foxing, and the wooden dowels for warping — all of which usually point to poor finishing or humid storage before shipment.

Authentic thangkas are painted on a cotton canvas that has been stretched, sized with a chalk-and animal-glue ground, and burnished smooth before any pigment is applied, then framed with hand-stitched silk brocade and two wooden dowels. Pigments are mineral and organic (malachite, cinnabar, lapis, indigo, turmeric) plus genuine gold leaf or shell-gold for highlights, which gives the soft matte layering and the slow, buildable color you cannot get from inkjet. Printed copies are usually polyester or thin cotton with heat-transfer dyes, plastic-coated gold, and a stiff hand; they also lack the chalk ground, so the surface looks flat and the colors sit on top rather than absorbing into the weave.

Custom canvas sizes are easy — studios cut and size cotton to any dimension, and the dowels can be made to match. Custom deities are also possible, but the artist must work from an approved iconographic reference (typically Karma Gadri, Menri, or other recognized Tibetan/Nepalese lineage drawings), so you cannot freely redesign a Buddha's posture, hand gestures, or attributes. 'Custom colors' are the most constrained area: each deity has prescribed skin, robe, and ornament colors tied to Buddhist symbolism, and a reputable painter will refuse to change them — what you can usually customize is the background landscape, mandala petals, or brocade color.

There is no widely enforced GI specifically for thangka, so authenticity is established through the studio's reputation, the artist's training lineage, and supporting paperwork rather than a single government mark. You should ask for the studio's Nepal Department of Industry / cottage-industry registration, the artist's school or master name, and clear close-up photos showing brush linework and pigment texture; many buyers also request a short video of the artist at work and a sample of the cotton ground's chalk sizing. Be cautious of any supplier who cannot name the painting lineage or refuses to share work-in-progress images, as thangka painting is one of the most commonly machine-printed crafts in the region.

Thangkas must be rolled, never folded, around a wide acid-free tube (roughly 8–10 cm diameter) with the painted face outward, separated from the silk brocade by a layer of acid-free tissue and an outer muslin wrap to prevent abrasion. Each roll should sit in a snug cardboard tube box with a silica desiccant to control humidity, marked 'fragile' and 'do not bend,' and cartons are best kept under 20–25 kg so the dowels and brocade are not crushed. For customs, hand-painted thangkas are usually declared under HS 9701 (paintings executed entirely by hand); confirm the current subheading with your broker, and check whether your destination country requires any declaration for natural mineral pigments such as cinnabar.
