MOQ is driven primarily by kiln capacity — a wood- or gas-fired Moroccan kiln must be filled with a single glaze color to fire evenly, so partial batches either waste fuel or shift color during firing. Custom colors typically require 30–50 m² minimum to justify the kiln setup and the hand-glazing labor. Unit price also reflects the menqel (hammer) cutting: the more intricate the shape — think 8-pointed stars or interlocking arabesques — the slower the cutter and the higher the per-tile cost.

Slight edge chipping, gentle glaze crazing, minor pits, and 1–3 mm size variation are inherent to the handcut process and should not be grounds for rejection — in fact, they are part of the material's character. Rejectable defects are hairline cracks running through the clay body, glaze flaking or peeling, warping that prevents a tile sitting flush, and color contamination where a darker pigment has bled into a pale tile. Always sort on a flat surface and cull cracked tiles before installation, as cracks propagate under grout.

Authentic zellige is a low-fired terracotta body with a transparent or colored ceramic glaze fused on top, giving the surface its slight sheen and visible color depth. For pools, spas, hotel bathrooms, and food-service areas, specify lead-free and cadmium-free glazes and request a glaze composition declaration from the maker, as older Moroccan glazes historically used heavy-metal colorants. Frost resistance is limited because of the porous clay body, so exterior use in freeze-thaw climates should be avoided or confirmed in writing with the producer.

Color customization is straightforward — a sample chip is glazed and fired, you sign off, and that recipe is scaled to your batch. Shape customization is also possible because every tile is hand-cut from a glazed slab with a menqel hammer, but the more complex the geometry (interlocking tessellations versus simple squares), the longer the cutting time and the higher the rejection rate during cutting. Budget 8–12 weeks of production after sample approval, plus a mockup panel, because pattern alignment on site is unforgiving if dimensions are off by even 2 mm.

Zellige is associated with the Fez region and falls under Moroccan craft-origin protections, with the master artisans (maâlems) historically organized by guild. For hospitality procurement, ask the supplier for a certificate of origin stating the production region, a material safety data sheet covering the glaze chemistry, and references or photographs from prior hotel or commercial installations. Be cautious of suppliers offering 'Moroccan-style' zellige made in Spain, Turkey, or Asia — the clay body, glaze translucency, and edge quality are visibly different.
